It took 2 full months, about 20 hours of work and almost $600 to obtain a rather simple building permit to make some changes to our new property. I wish I could say that this was the end but the Electrician, Plumber and HVAC contractors all need to pull permits as well. By the time that this project is over we will have about $1,000 in paper cost; what a waste of resources.

Hey, just our local governments doing what they do best…red tape & mediocracy! Then the town’s “leaders” cannot understand why no one wants to locate a biz in that town.
@Nancy – how true. The paper cost will be 5 – 8% of the overall project cost. Plus the Inspectors usually make us add on things (such as extra insulation, interconnected smoke detectors..etc) that contribute to the cost and time of the project based on the ever widening building codes. It’s not surprising that so many people just skip this process altogether.
