Great turnout for Haddam-Killingworth Rotary kick off event

The new Haddam-Killingworth Rotary Club is off to a great start. Many future Rotarians attended our first ‘meet & greet’ event this evening at the Killingworth Public Library 301 Connecticut 81, Killingworth, CT 06419.

 

The Old Saybrook Rotary Club (OSR) has agreed to be the official sponsor of the newly forming H-K Rotary Club.

DGE Gerry Tom heads to the International Assembly

Did you know that the International Assembly is the one premier Rotary training event where all of the 534 District Governors-elect (those who will be District Governor on July 1st) from all over the world come together to be trained by some of the best resources that Rotary International has to offer? Did you also know that this is the event where the Rotary International President Elect (RIPE), interesting acronym, will release the new RI theme for 2015-16?

The International Assembly is the last stop on the multi-year training journey that incoming District Governors (DGE’s) make. They have spent the past several years attending dozens of PETS planning meetings, countless district meetings and zone meetings all in preparation for their year as District Governor.

It’s a full out sprint to July 1st for DGE Gerry after she returns from the International Assembly as from there she’s responsible for running a District Leadership meeting, conducting PEO/Pre-PETS meeting, having an integral leadership role in running NE PETS, running the District Assembly and then running her Installation event in late June. Sprinkled in between all of this are about 2-3 dozen somewhat related planning meetings that Gerry needs to be part of.

D7980 District Conference – Register Now get EARLY BIRD Rates

This years D7980 District Conference will be held at the Dolce in Norwalk CT from May 14 – 17th.

The lowest rates $$$ (Super Early Bird) are being extended for a short while longer so please register now by clicking here

Given that this conference is in Connecticut we will sell out of hotel rooms again, as we did last year. So be sure to register early if you are planning on staying at the Dolce. About 50% of the hotel rooms have already been reserved.

It will be a great conference that should prove to be fun and a good value as it will be held right here in our backyard of beautiful Norwalk CT.

The conference committee: Ann Brignola (Chair), Tari Marshall-Day (Event Planner), Heather Hackle (Registrar), Cheryl Smith (Co-Registrar) and the Nori’s have been carefully planning this event for a very long time.

New Rotaract Club forming at Southern CT State University (SCSU)

The kick off meeting for D7980’s newest Rotaract Club was held in the School of Business at Southern CT State University (SCSU) last evening.

The New Haven Rotary Club has been diligently working to establish a University based Rotaract Club at SCSU and is sponsoring this new Rotaract Club.

Arzoo Rohbar is the SCSU student who has taken the initiative to launch the Club and will most likely be be Club’s first president. Rick Bassett (me) will serve as the faculty advisor for the Club.

Rotary District 7980 currently has 10 Rotaract Clubs; 7 are University based and 3 are Community based. The addition of this Club would make the count 11, 8 and 3.

Members of Rotaract are part of a global community of young adults taking action for positive change. Rotaract is a club for adults ages 18-30 that meets twice a month to exchange ideas, plan activities and projects, and socialize. While Rotary clubs serve as sponsors, Rotaract clubs decide how to organize and run their club and what projects and activities to carry out.

“Rotaract” stands for “Rotary in Action”, although the name originally comes from a combination of “Rotary” and “Interact” (International + Action), the high school level program created by Rotary International in 1962.

Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in 1968 at Charlotte North Rotary Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, and has grown into a major Rotary-sponsored organization of over 9,539 clubs spread around the world and 219,397 members

The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service.

Haddam-Killingworth Provisional Rotary Club launched

Haddam-Killingworth IMG_8166The journey for D7980’s newest Club, the Haddam-Killingworth (H-K) Rotary Club, began last night with a strategy planning meeting at La Foresta Restaurant in Killingworth CT.

10 people gathered last night to begin the planning process for getting the Provisional Haddam-Killingworth Rotary Club chartered as a fill fledged Club.

Community leaders from Haddam and Killingworth expressed interest in having a Rotary Club in their town(s) to help address need which are currently going unmet.

Co-Presidents Annie Gill Stirna and Nelson Vincenty will navigate the Provisional Club  through the Charter process which will begin with a membership drive as the Club must have at least 20 members before they can be Chartered as a Rotary Club.

The Club will be part of Area 10 (Jack Solomon, Assistant Governor) once Chartered. Jack and I will guide and mentor the Provisional Club through the process.

The Provisional Club will a hold super-sized ‘Meet & Greet’ on Jan 21, 2015 for prospective members (more information to follow).

The members of  the Clinton Rotary Club (Area 8) have voted to sponsor the H-K Rotary Club.
