Four Way Test Speech Contest Semi-Finals held at SCSU on Sunday

13 of our Rotary Clubs conducted their own 4-Way Speech Contests to determine their finalists. The finalists from these Clubs competed in the district semi-finals yesterday at Southern CT State University in the School of Business building (510 Crescent Street – New Haven). The field of 13 excellent candidates was narrowed down to just 3 as the competition was concluded.

The final 4-way Test Speech Contest will take place during the District Assembly Luncheon at the Mystic Marriott on May 3rd between 12 – 1:30 in front of a record crowd.

District 7980 Four Way Speech Contest Announced

District 7980 Four Way Speech Contest Chair Roy Fuchs is pleased to announce that it will once again sponsor a Four-Way Test Speech Contest. Every club is encouraged to engage with its local high school. Each local winner will compete in the Semi-Finals Competition on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.

The top three winners of the Semi-Finals Competition will go on to represent their clubs at the Finals Competition on Saturday, May 3 at the District Assembly to be held at the Mystic Marriott and Spa, Groton, Connecticut.

The top three winners at the District Finals will receive monetary prizes of $500 for First Place; $400 for Second Place, and $300 for Third Place.

Each participating club must present one finalist from that club on Sunday, April 6 at 2:00 pm at the District Semi-Finals Contest at the School of Business, Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven. Club application to compete must be returned to Roy Fuchs by March 15.

Each club agrees to pay a registration fee of $150 per student, payable to District 7980, for speakers who will compete at the District Semi-Finals at SCSU.  This fee will pay for prizes and food for the speakers, and all fees will be used solely for this competition.

Individual clubs may (and should) offer prizes for their club competitions, as they see fit. There are no monetary prizes offered at the Semi-Finals – only at the Finals.

The sponsoring club must arrange for any transportation, food and accommodation needs, and must absorb associated costs incurred by the participants. Specific arrangements must be made by the individual clubs and communicated to the participants to eliminate any misunderstanding.

Information about the competition, including objectives, application forms and a sample score sheet are can be downloaded below. It is important that rules and regulations be followed uniformly so each student will be prepared for the finals.

Official Visit #58 – East Haddam Rotary

The 2nd visit is charm to the East Haddam Rotary Club.  I visited the Club back in September thinking that it would be an official visit but we became so engrossed in conversation that it never happened. Fast forward about 2 months and I returned to meet with the East Haddam Rotarians for the Official Visit. The Club was accommodating in that they agreed to change their meeting night from Thursday to Wednesday to make the visit work.

I brought Frances Viggiani, a prospective member along, , as special thank you to the Club for being so flexible. Frances and I teach together in the School of Business at Southern CT State University in New Haven (a shameless plug on my part for SCSU).

The Club has 10 hardworking members, hopefully 11 soon, that do an amazing amount of things for their size. Recently they:

  • Ran a Food Drive at Chestelm for their local food bank
  • They raised over $3,500 for the Liberty Bank Thanksgiving Food Drive
  • They co-hosted a Halloween event in conjunction with Project Safe Halloween at Rotary Park
  • They ran a Rotary / Scouting Pasta Dinner at the Sportsman’s Club in East Haddam

The East Haddam Rotary Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at the Gelston House, right next to Goodspeed Opera House, overlooking the Connecticut river.  It’s a beautiful historic restaurant with spectacular views of the Connecticut River filled with warm and friendly Rotarians.

25 Presidents-elect from all over New England attended a day long Rotary PETS makeup at the School of Business of Southern CT State University in New Haven, CT on Saturday May 11th.

The training session was facilitated by DGE Mike Barnett (D7890), DGE Rick Bassett (D7980), PDG Julie Reppenhagen and PDG Rick Benson.

Topics covered included: Club Administration, Membership, Public Relations, Foundation and Goal Setting.

The event was catered by Theresa Viele, Debbie Volain and Jon Martinek  of the North Haven Rotary Club.

Westport Sunrise Rotary sends 16 to the District Assembly

Rotary District 7980’s District Assembly was held at Southern CT State University on April 13, 2013 and was attended by 250. Attendees were treated to excellent keynote speakers, breakout sessions, a Grants Management Seminar and pretty good food service.

SCSU’s School of Business provided substantial sponsorship to the us making it possible for us to utilize the Adanti Center for this event.

The North Haven Rotary Club, led by District Assembly Chair Nick Casella, did a fabulous logistical job organizing the event and keeping everything moving along on proper timing.

The 2013 District Assembly Concludes

The 2013 Rotary 7980 District Assembly came to successful conclusion on Saturday afternoon.

We had approximately 250 attendees throughout the day which participated in dozens of sessions in the Breakout and Foundation Tracks which were led by our very talented facilitators and Rotary Club participants.

The Adanti Center at Southern CT State University was a fabulous venue for the District Assembly that was made possible by the generosity of SCSU’s School of Business.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
