Geographically Cromwell CT is still part of District 7980 although we don’t currently have a club there. We are looking to establish a new club in Cromwell if anyone is interested in helping us getting one off the ground.

Official Visit #18 – Waterbury Rotary Club – The Oldest Club in D7980

To look at the faces in the photos above an observer would never guess that at 96 years old, the Waterbury Rotary Club is the oldest club in our district and the second oldest club in the State of Connecticut.

The club was charted on April 1, 1917 and has a long storied history of community service in the ‘Brass City’. Some of their recent good works include:

The Waterbury Rotary Club is currently 21 members strong and they are determined to increase their numbers substantially this year as President Ellen Pollack and her team have made membership their top priority. They have a dedicated membership committee that is working on a comprehensive retention and recruitment plan. Assistant Governor Dave Dlugos will be working with the Waterbury team on this plan.

The Waterbury Rotary Club meets on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday each month for lunch at Vasi’s Restaurant & Bar at 1700 Watertown Ave. Waterbury, CT 06708. It’s a nice restaurant with a great group of Rotarians, stop in for lunch.

Stratford Rotary Short Beach Fellowship

The members of the Stratford Rotary Club know that it can’t be all work and no play, so play they do. Last night the Stratford Rotary Club held a waterside fellowship picnic at Short Beach in Stratford Connecticut.  Short Beach is another one of those hidden gems in Connecticut that is within 20 miles of my house which I had no idea was there. Near-home discoveries like this are one of the biggest benefits of the DG job.

There was plenty of good times, good food and great family fun last night as over 50 adults and children attended. Besides having a very nice clean beach and a comfortable pavilion, the venue has a very large playscape for kids to explore. Immediate Past President Chris Pia was leading the way on the beach with a new game of skill involving throwing a frisbee into a can.

Jennifer Bassett was giving President-elect Pat Gallagher and her husband lessons learned about her Rotary training experience including proper waving techniques. AG Ann Brignola and Joe were in attendance and enjoying themselves. Ann was happily bragging about and showing photos of the new Star in their family.

President Bill O’Brien is having a great time leading his club this year and we both commented on how fast that the time is flying by. Many of members of Bill’s family were in attendance last night including his sister Joan who recently gave a program on Feng shui to the Stratford Rotary Club. Joan’s talk calibrated the balance of this already high functioning club that knows…happy Rotarians are Engaged Rotarians.

President Ed Vescovi has a full plate this year as the Branford Rotary Club of 66 members runs several major events and actively supports dozens of local and international causes.

The Branford Rotary club did a ‘reboot’ about a year ago and went back to basics under Past President Tony Terry’s leadership. At the same time Tony and his board dusted off the results of their ‘Club Visioning session’ and took a long hard look at it with respect to the core values that were important to their club. The Result? A Vibrant Rotary that is growing, having fun, raising a ton of money and doing a tremendous amount of good in the community and the world.

The Branford Rotary club has added 11 new members in the past year including a new one today, Kerry Haynes, who was sponsored by Emily Granelli.

Newtown Rotary Club recognizes 10 members with 25 years of service or more

Service above Self has been the proud motto of the members of the Newtown Connecticut Rotary Club for the past 75 years and the club is recognizing all of its current membership that have served for 25 years or more:

Dan Honan – Achieves 25 years of membership in October this year: during his term he has been Club Secretary and is a past President (1993/94) and has supported most of the Clubs activities. Dan is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Sustaining EREY Member.

Scott Senete – Achieved 26 years of service to the club in June this year: is a past President (2000/01) and has served as project chair for Ability beyond Disability and is current chair of the Newtown Rotary Club Foundation with its focus on the Sandy Hook School Fund. Very active in local chamber affairs he brings the Four Way Test to that function. A Paul Harris Fellow with two Sapphires, and a Sustaining EREY member. He is currently deputy Sergeant at Arms a job he performs with the suitable hilarity!

Tom Nipper – Joined the Rotary Club of Danbury in 1978 and transferred to Newtown in 2007, a 35 year servant to Rotary; a semi retired Orthopedic Surgeon has supported many of the clubs activities, particularly fund raisers such as the Annual Golf tournament and raffles, a great salesman. He is a Paul Harris Fellow with three sapphires and a Sustaining EREY Member.

Lou Holzner – Will achieve 35 years of service in November, is a past President (1982-83) he has supported most of the Club’s activities over the years. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Sustaining EREY member. Another great salesman for all of the Club’s fund raising efforts.

A Paul Harris Fellow with four sapphires; he is also a Sustaining EREY member.

Earl Smith Jr. – Achieved 46 years of service to Rotary, and this community in May. Gives the best and sometimes the longest “grace” at our weekly dinner meetings. A retired educator and active in the local Democratic Part Committee his attendance record is wonderful bearing in mind his deteriorated health. A past President (1975/76) he is a Paul Harris Fellow with three sapphires and a Sustaining EREY member.

Bob Hall – Achieved 46 years of service in February he is a practicing attorney who lends his skills and experience to our activities; currently he is Secretary to the Newtown Rotary Club Foundation where is experience is much needed with the Sandy Hook School Fund. Bob Grossman – With 53 years of service Dr. Bob is our longest serving member; a retired surgeon is currently a local Medical Examiner. Has been known to ne the protector of the secret pancake recipe for the Annual Pancake breakfast, he is one of the chief flippers!  Currently, the Clubs Sergeant at Arms working on being the best extractor of fines in the history of the Club.  Surprisingly never a Club president (job restrictions prevented this role) nevertheless an active supporter of all things Rotary. President Laureen Morley has 2 additional members in the pipeline, which we may possibly induct during the Official Visit in late September.
