Official Visit #42 – Black Rock Rotary

Members of the Black Rock Rotary Club

The Black Rock Connecticut Rotary Club is unlike any other in our district. At first glance one could almost mistake this Rotary Club as a Community based Rotaract Club given their energy level and youthful make-up.  All of the members are young professionals or they are young at heart.

At about 5 years young, this is one of the newer clubs in our district. The majority of the Black Rock Rotarians have the honor of wearing the ‘Charter Member’ badge. One of the nice things about his Club is that they don’t have to encounter the typical ‘This is the way we have always done it’ roadblocks, as they don’t have 50-95 years of legacy to contend with. History and legacy can be a good thing but not having it certainly frees up the Black Rock Rotarians up to be nimble and entrepreneurial in many ways, which other Clubs cannot easily do.

Meetings are interesting while being far less formal than most others that I’ve been to. Members sit around a large table facing each other and engage interesting conversation about their goals, projects and fundraisers. Also no typical heavy expensive meal is part of their meeting as the fare consists of basically wine, water and Tapas.  This allows the Club to keep the dues, the calories and the meeting length manageable (they meet from 6pm-7pm).

For a Rotary Club of 11 members this group has accomplishments that would rival Clubs 2 to 3 times their size. They support numerous local community projects including: The Black Rock Food Pantry, Black Rock School, and the Black Rock Library.

While they are looking to increase their membership to a more comfortable number, which they affectionately deem ‘the sweet spot’, they know themselves well enough to recognize that adding the right kind of member is far more important than adding just anyone for the sake of making membership goal numbers. Kudos to them!!

This official visit was much less formal than most of the others. Stimulating casual conversation crowded out the opportunity for The DG Talk on this evening, there will be other nights for that.

This is a small but likable group of Rotarians that are a pure joy to be around and I highly recommend attending as a make-up. I also recommend that you consider sending any youthful professionals here as possible members as this group is the real deal.  I’m looking forward to returning soon.

The Black Rock Rotary Club meets on Tuesdays from 6-7pm at The Field Restaurant at 3001 Fairfield Ave in Bridgeport CT.

Official Visit #41 – Stratford Rotary Club

Visit the Stratford Connecticut Rotary Club and you will immediately feel the vibrancy in the air. This is a group of Rotarians that clearly enjoys the company of each other and knows how to have fun. They party on the beach; take road trips with each to Mohegan Sun, playfully rib each other during happy bucks and will rib each other at Rib Night (shameless plug) on Nov 16th.

President Bill O’Brien always has a contagious smile on his face, unless scoundrels are placing signs illegally around Stratford. Bill is an organized leader with the gift of inspiration. One could argue that it is easy to look this good when being surrounded by this great group of Stratford Rotarians and certainly there is some truth in that. Bill took over from Immediate Past President Chris Pia who did a bang-up job last year, which included inducting and retaining 5 new members.

The Stratford Rotary Club is a very active mid-sized club of 42 with aspirations to grow to 50 members. Some of their fundraisers and activities include:

  • Annual Carnival
  • Pancake Breakfast
  • Annual Paper Shredding Event
  • Dictionary Project (3rd Graders)
  • Thesaurus Project (5th Graders)….quick what’s another name for Thesaurus?
  • Provided a hot dog lunch for the kids at the South End Community Center’s annual Bike Rodeo
  • Rotary Par 3 Shotgun Golf Tournament

They maintain an active Facebook page that is worth LIKING <click here>

They meet for lunch on Tuesdays at the Oronoque Country Club @ 385 Oronoque Lane, Stratford, CT in a room that overlooks a well manicured Golf Course.

All of this and they gave me a bottle of wine as a Speakers Gift today!! What’s not to like? I will be back!!!

Official Visit #40 – Hamden Rotary Club – Rebooting for the next 76 years

The Hamden Rotary Club has gone back to basics this year under President Mohammad “Mo” Elahee’s expert leadership as they focus on the reinventing their Club. Like many Rotary Clubs, their club has experienced a steady erosion in membership over the past several years which has impacted their ability to do all of the important things that they wish to do.

The Club has been around for 76+ years and they are proactively taking steps to position themselves for the next 76 years.

It’s refreshing to work with a leadership team that consciously appreciates that their Club’s well being directly affects the good which they are able to do in their community and the world.

President Mo (also President in 2008-09) and his board are experimenting with a number of approaches this year including:

  • Switching the majority of their evening meetings to morning meetings
  • Hosting a fellowship on (or about) the 4th week of each month in place of their regular meeting
  • Suspending most fundraising activities for the year to focus on Club Service as Priority #1
  • Eliminating activities which distract their attention from their core mission

So far the subtle changes seem to be having a positive effect as attendance and participation are gradually rising.

The Hamden Rotary Club has a rich deep history and is a an important component of our District. Hamden Rotary is the home club of:

They also sponsored the North Haven Rotary Club (my home club) in 1941.

The Hamden Rotary Club meets at the Playwright Restaurant for Breakfast meetings at 7:30AM on first & second Tuesday, and at 5:45PM for dinner on 3rd Tuesday. The meals are great, as is the fellowship. Stop by and say hello.

Official Visit #39 – Greenwich Rotary Club

The Greenwich Rotary Club has grown it’s membership ranks by 4 members so far this year bringing their club size to just around 55.

After bouncing around for a little while, the club has finally landed at a top notch meeting facility; The Greenwich Hyatt Regency Hotel . The lunch at this club rivals the best in District, which is probably the New Canaan Club. The deserts beat almost all others except perhaps the chocolate cake at the Graduate Club in New Haven. Enough about the meals…..this isn’t a foodie column.

President Larry Larson and his board are focusing the majority of their attention in 3 key areas this year:

  • Membership Growth and Meeting Vibrancy
  • Improving Fundraising
  • Foundation Involvement

Another area of interest for President Larry is to revive the dormant Interact Club at the High School.

Club Vibrancy has already picked up in the short time (4 weeks or so) that they have been meeting at The Greenwich Hyatt Regency as they meet in rooms with large windows that open to a beautiful atrium  (some of the photos touch on it but don’t do it full justice). There is something to be said about putting a group of friendly Rotarians in a bright room with great food and excellent service…..hmmmm a formula for happiness perhaps?

It is worth doing battle on the I95 traffic to visit the Greenwich Rotary Club. They meet on Wednesday afternoons for lunch at The Greenwich Hyatt Regency Hotel @ 1800 E. Putnam Ave. Old Greenwich.

Official Visit #38 – Bridgeport Rotary Club welcomes Valerie Koch into the Paul Harris Society

Yesterday was a special day at the Bridgeport Rotary Club as Rotarian Valerie Koch was inducted into the Paul Harris Society  and recognized for her generous support of the Rotary Foundation. Valerie has been a Rotarian since 1999 and has been a long standing sustaining member of The Rotary Foundation.  Jim Satterwhite, Madison Rotarian and District Paul Harris Society Chair did the honors of pinning her.

Yesterday’s visit was extra special in that I was given the honor of inducting, Crystal, their newest member into the club. The club is on a bit of a membership roll in that they brought in 10 new quality members last year and have their sights set on bringing in another 10 this year. Assistant Governor Chris Johnson noted that the new members which the club has brought in are quality hardworking members of the community that truly reflect the diversity and heart of Bridgeport Connecticut.

The Bridgeport Connecticut Rotary Club  has played an important and historical role in the development of the Greater Bridgeport Community since 1919. Today, the 59 members of the Bridgeport Rotary Club are key players in supporting many community based initiatives including: The Connecticut Food Bank, Park City Prep, Student of the Month, Wilbur Cross School, Interact, Regional Youth Leadership Academy, The Dictionary Project, Weekly Reader and the Read Aloud Program. Internationally the club supports: PolioPlus, The Dengue Fever Project, St Mary Twinning Medical Team Haiti and The Pune India Smart Panel Project.

Besides the great works that this club is doing there are many interesting things going on in this club including their ‘Friends of Rotary‘ program, their unique club banner and their focus on Foundation Giving.

At 3, the Bridgeport Rotary Club has more Past District Governors (per square inch) as current members than other D7980 Club. Bridgeport Rotary is the home club of PDG Abe Gordon, PDG Bob Vossler and PDG John Annick. The Club is also the home club of two of my favorite Rotarian friends; Ed Davies and Rosa J. Correa.

The Bridgeport Rotary Club meets for lunch on Tuesdays at the Holiday Inn @ 1070 Main St, Bridgeport, CT. Stop in for lunch to see what a great job that President Anita is doing leading the club this year.

Official Visit #37 – Trumbull Rotary Club

The 80+ members of Trumbull Connecticut Rotary Club  meet on Friday mornings at the Trumbull Library. This is an extremely active club that does a considerable amount of fundraisers and hands-on events to support the community and international causes that they believe in.

It is obvious that the members of this club enjoy each others’ company and look forward to coming these meetings each week to see each other. This is a fun club as anyone can witness by just sitting through ‘Happy Bucks’.

The Trumbull Rotary Club is a model of what Rotary International would call a ‘Vibrant Club’ as they have a clear leadership plan (they know who their next 3 President’s will be), they have a strong membership base, they have a unique mentoring program in place for their new members, they generously give to The Rotary Foundation, they maintain a public facing website that is easy to follow and are leveraging social media, several of their members maintain important district positions and they get the importance of fellowships.

Some of their recent efforts and projects include:

  • providing scholarships for high school students living in Trumbull
  • building pavilions at Twin Brooks Park & Lakewood Trumbull YMCA
  • supporting local arts and high school programs
  • distributing dictionaries to each Trumbull 3rd grader
  • sponsoring senior programs such as our Senior Picnic
  • sponsoring Trumbull & Bridgeport Read Aloud
  • supporting an inner-city Weekly Reader program
  • providing a 15 passenger van to Merton House
  • providing major support for the Micklus Golf Training Center at Tashua Knolls Community Golf Course
  • providing safe water filtration equipment at several communities in India
  • coordinating CPR & AED training for community members
  • working with UN, CDC, WHO, and the Gates Foundation to eliminate polio worldwide
  • donate park benches along the Pequonnock River Trail

The Trumbull Rotary Club runs the following annual fundraisers:

President Holly is a great leader that is having a blast leading her Club this year. A visiting Rotarian will feel nothing but good vibes when making up at the Trumbull Rotary Club on Friday mornings, which I highly recommend.
