Official Visit #37 – Trumbull Rotary Club

The 80+ members of Trumbull Connecticut Rotary Club  meet on Friday mornings at the Trumbull Library. This is an extremely active club that does a considerable amount of fundraisers and hands-on events to support the community and international causes that they believe in.

It is obvious that the members of this club enjoy each others’ company and look forward to coming these meetings each week to see each other. This is a fun club as anyone can witness by just sitting through ‘Happy Bucks’.

The Trumbull Rotary Club is a model of what Rotary International would call a ‘Vibrant Club’ as they have a clear leadership plan (they know who their next 3 President’s will be), they have a strong membership base, they have a unique mentoring program in place for their new members, they generously give to The Rotary Foundation, they maintain a public facing website that is easy to follow and are leveraging social media, several of their members maintain important district positions and they get the importance of fellowships.

Some of their recent efforts and projects include:

  • providing scholarships for high school students living in Trumbull
  • building pavilions at Twin Brooks Park & Lakewood Trumbull YMCA
  • supporting local arts and high school programs
  • distributing dictionaries to each Trumbull 3rd grader
  • sponsoring senior programs such as our Senior Picnic
  • sponsoring Trumbull & Bridgeport Read Aloud
  • supporting an inner-city Weekly Reader program
  • providing a 15 passenger van to Merton House
  • providing major support for the Micklus Golf Training Center at Tashua Knolls Community Golf Course
  • providing safe water filtration equipment at several communities in India
  • coordinating CPR & AED training for community members
  • working with UN, CDC, WHO, and the Gates Foundation to eliminate polio worldwide
  • donate park benches along the Pequonnock River Trail

The Trumbull Rotary Club runs the following annual fundraisers:

President Holly is a great leader that is having a blast leading her Club this year. A visiting Rotarian will feel nothing but good vibes when making up at the Trumbull Rotary Club on Friday mornings, which I highly recommend.

8 Rotary Clubs come out to support Newtown Connecticut in the Labor Day Parade

iPDG Brian put up the ‘Wheel Signal’ about a month ago for area Rotary Clubs to participate in Newtown’s Labor Day Parade and he received marching support from eight Rotary clubs including; Newtown Rotary Monroe Rotary, Danbury Rotary, Ridgefield Rotary, Ridgefield Sunrise Rotary, Trumbull Rotary, East Hampton Rotary and North Haven Rotary (hopefully I didn’t miss any).

Over 100 community groups marched in the parade (or rode in a cool yellow car) today through on and off rain and the occasional threat of a thunder boomer. The weather didn’t seem to thin the crowds a bit as parade viewers were out in big numbers in full support of Newtown Connecticut.

The Newtown Rotary Club was kind enough to select yellow as the color for their 75th Anniversary shirts as they know what this DG knows; Yellow is the Happiest Color!!! It even helped to offset the fact that we were marching behind the Lions, perhaps we will be in front of them next year. Our own iPDG Brian Amey, Newtown Rotary Club, was one of the key committee organizers of the Newtown Labor Day Parade today. Brian was keeping duty at the end of the parade and wasn’t fortunate enough to get one the yellow shirts. For some reason he was wearing a lime color shirt.

From the community outpouring today it is clear that Newtown is a town on the mend. Jennifer and I were happy and honored to be part of this event today.

Significant TRF Recognitions at Trumbull Rotary Club

Dr. Mark Horton was inducted into the Paul Harris Society (PHS) this morning in front of a large crowd at his new home club. Mark has been a Rotarian for 25 years and recently transfered from the Danbury Club to the Trumbull Club. Mark and his wife Sue generously give their time, money and talents to Rotary and truly embody what it means to be Rotarians.

The Paul Harris Society (PHS) is our district’s recognition program for Rotarians who wish to support The Rotary Foundation in a more substantial way each year. The Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotarians and friends of  Rotary who annually contribute $1,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation (the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, PolioPlus Partners, or Humanitarian Grants). Jim Satterwhite, Paul Harris Society Chair, left his house at 5:30 am to ensure that Mark was properly recognized.  Jim is tireless in his efforts to maintain and grow the membership of the PHS as he has a great appreciation for the good that The Rotary Foundation does.

The Trumbull Rotary Club also awarded a Paul Harris fellow to deserving member Ben Stratford this morning in recognition his many achievements in the club during his relatively short tenure. Ben is a 5th generation Rotarian.
