District 7980 Significant Club Achievement Awards Receive Major Overhaul

Sample Club Achievment Recognition

Sample Club Achievment Recognition

Now for something completely different…..Rotary Clubs will be recognized for the goals that they achieve and the amazing things that they do WITHOUT having to self-nominate themselves.

It’s 2014 and the District 7980 Leadership Team has come up with a progressive streamlined process that is aligned with the 4-Way test for recognizing the good works done by our Rotary Clubs.

In the past our Clubs had to submit 3 page proposals (self-nominations) in each Avenue of Service to be considered for awards. The process was so burdensome and subjective that only about 15% of our Clubs participated on a regular basis.

Now the playing field has been leveled as all Clubs, regardless of the number of members that they have or the depth of their pockets, have exactly the same opportunity to receive public recognition as long as they have met or exceeded their stated goals.

How it works:

Each of our 61 Rotary Clubs will be evaluated by their Assistant Governors (AG) to determine if their Clubs have met or exceeded their goals in the Avenues of Service and The Rotary Foundation since July 1, 2013. AG’s will review all Club data points available to them on their Clubs such as:

  • The DG’s Blog postings
  • The Mid-year Survey that the President’s took
  • Reports from Rotary International
  • Club generated public relations such as newsletters, social media, websites and publicity received
  • One-on-one meetings with their Club Presidents
AG’s must submit via email by 3/15/14

AG’s must submit via email by 3/15/14

AG’s will then submit the goals and a photo (or two) for each of their qualifying Clubs to the District Governor no later than March 15th.

Qualifying Clubs will be recognized in a very public way in front of record crowds during the District Conference and District Assembly in Groton, CT May 2-4th.

But wait there is more…..

These recognitions will be similar in format to the sample at the top of the page and will be featured as posters (2.5′ x 3.5′) in the House of Friendship during the District Conference and via video throughout the entire Conference. Club representatives attending the Conference will be presented with the poster-sized recognition to bring back to their Club at the conclusion of the Conference.

And as if that weren’t enough, still more….

Qualifying Clubs will receive electronic versions of these recognitions which are suitable for framing (8.5″ x 11″) and displaying in prominent places; a very nice perk for the all of the Rotarians who make success possible.

Could there possibly be more? Absolutely…..

Qualifying Clubs will also receive electronic versions of their recognitions which can be posted on their websites, Facebook pages or in any digital venue.

The 26th Annual Norman K. Parsells Award Luncheon

The Fairfield Rotary Club hosted the 26th Annual Norman K. Parsells Award Luncheon today at the Gaelic-American Club.

The Norman K. Parsells Award,  is presented annually to honor the memory and spirit of Norm Parsells.  He was a dedicated Rotarian who served his community and Rotary, demonstrating Rotary’s ideal of “Service Above Self”. The recipients of the Award are being recognized as Rotarians who personifies the same spirit and dedication to their community and Rotary that Norm represented during his lifetime.

Because of their outstanding service to their Rotary Clubs, their communities and to Rotary International, the 2013 recipients of the Norman King Parsells Award are:

Norm was an attorney, a majority leader in the House of Representative and a very active member of his community.

Areas four and five of District 7980 honor the memory and spirit of Norm Parsells, a dedicated Rotarian who served his community well. Norm’s dedicated service to the community demonstrated Rotary’s ideal of “service above self”.

There 10 Rotary Clubs in Areas four and five are: Milford, Devon, Stratford, Bridgeport, Black Rock, Fairfield, Orange, Derby-Shelton, Monroe and Trumbull.

Although Fairfield was his “home” club, he visited and worked with other clubs where many lasting friendships have been made. It is, then, quite fitting that each club in these areas join to honor him by issuing the Norman King Parsells Award.

Westport Sunrise Rotary celebrates their 25th Anniversary

About 100 Rotarians, former members, friends and family members turned out at the Red Barn in Westport last night to help the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club celebrate their 25th Anniversary in grand style.

Westport Sunrise - What we do

– better quality copy coming –

The event was a walk down memory lane for the Westport Sunrise Club as President Bob Galan called on Charter members past and present to recount the Club’s journey and the many successes that the Club has enjoyed over the years. A good number of members from the Westport Club turned out to share in the celebration. Combined, the two Westport Clubs have over 160 members all of which are dedicated to making their community a better place.

Although my friend Gerri Lewis, President of the Old Saybrook Club, cringes every time that I  say it; The Westport Sunrise Club is a perfect example of what a Vibrant Rotary Club is all about.

Westport Sunrise does interesting fundraisers, has interesting weekly meetings, generously supports their community and the world, supports the Rotary Foundation, plays nice with the Westport Rotary Club, participates in international projects, has excellent Club leadership (past and present), is a big supporter of yellow, has many members of the Club that are active in the district, the zone and with Rotary International. Roy Fuchs heads up the 4-way test contest, Dennis Wong (President-elect) is involved with Peace and Polio programs, Eric Zelinksi is part of the District Finance Committee and John Hendrickson is a Assistant Governor of Area 2.

The Club event contributed two rubber ducks for my dining room.

The Westport Sunrise Club even contributed two rubber ducks for my dining room.

For a small Club, the Ridgefield Sunrise Club has been very active this year. So far:

They added 5 new members

They changed their meeting venue to Tom Tom’s Restaurant, 417 Main Street, Ridgefield

They collected well over 300 bags of food valued at over $6,000 at their food drive

They held a benefit dinner for the Disabled American Veterans, at 50 Coins Restaurant, on November 14th.

They just donated $1,200 to the Rotary Foundation and have committed to becoming an EREY (every Rotarian every year) Club in 2014

This is a new Club that was chartered in 2011 and is really beginning to get traction. We are looking forward to seeing big things from them.
