The Devon Rotary Club‘s Trust received a generous donation of $10,000 from Kelly Wade Bettuchi of AT&T last week.

The Devon Rotary Trust  is a 501 (c) (3) recognized charitable foundation trust of the Devon Rotary Club that makes community grants and scholarships annually.

The club just passed the $1 million mark in gifts to the community (read more here) as they generously support; Literacy Center of Milford, Beth El Shelter, Boys and Girls Club and Bridges Mentoring program to name just a few. They also award about $20,000 per year in scholarships to Milford students from their club foundation.

Milford Rotary rolls up their sleeves for the Beth-El Soup Kitchen

Twice a month, every month, volunteers from the Milford Rotary Club serve up a fantastic meal to the guests at the Beth-El Center Soup Kitchen. This Saturday the Club served a special Holiday Luncheon that featured holiday music by Jay Rowe, holiday decorations and an extra special meal.

Milford Rotarian Larry Landsberg, aka The Shoreline Chef, was quoted as saying “We served over 50 people a luncheon of roasted petit fillet, mashed potatoes and gravy, roasted vegetables, red velvet cake, and ice cream. Jay Rowe, international known smooth jazz pianist and Milford resident, friend of Milford Rotary played some holiday music. I am unsure who had a better time, our guests or the Rotarians.”

Chef Larry is the primary ‘cheerleader & chief” for this event for his Club as it a cause that he cares dearly about. His family is also stepping in to run 5 of the events during 2014.

The Milford Rotary Club is a big Club with a giant heart. With about 100 members they conduct large scale of fundraisers, such as the Lobster Bake, they give back to their community in dozens of ways including giving scholarships, they generously support The Rotary Foundation and they know how to have fun while doing so despite overcoming some daunting adversity.

Milford Connecticut is also home to The Devon Rotary Club which is a very active Club of 55 members that also actively participates every other Saturday in serving meals on a regular basis at the Beth-El Center. They have also donated a Van to the Beth-El Center.

The Milford and Devon Rotary Clubs regular ‘hands-on’ participation in the Beth-El Soup Kitchen demonstrates that these are groups of Rotarians who knows that it takes far more than simply writing checks to help their community.

The 26th Annual Norman K. Parsells Award Luncheon

The Fairfield Rotary Club hosted the 26th Annual Norman K. Parsells Award Luncheon today at the Gaelic-American Club.

The Norman K. Parsells Award,  is presented annually to honor the memory and spirit of Norm Parsells.  He was a dedicated Rotarian who served his community and Rotary, demonstrating Rotary’s ideal of “Service Above Self”. The recipients of the Award are being recognized as Rotarians who personifies the same spirit and dedication to their community and Rotary that Norm represented during his lifetime.

Because of their outstanding service to their Rotary Clubs, their communities and to Rotary International, the 2013 recipients of the Norman King Parsells Award are:

Norm was an attorney, a majority leader in the House of Representative and a very active member of his community.

Areas four and five of District 7980 honor the memory and spirit of Norm Parsells, a dedicated Rotarian who served his community well. Norm’s dedicated service to the community demonstrated Rotary’s ideal of “service above self”.

There 10 Rotary Clubs in Areas four and five are: Milford, Devon, Stratford, Bridgeport, Black Rock, Fairfield, Orange, Derby-Shelton, Monroe and Trumbull.

Although Fairfield was his “home” club, he visited and worked with other clubs where many lasting friendships have been made. It is, then, quite fitting that each club in these areas join to honor him by issuing the Norman King Parsells Award.

The Devon Rotary Club throws large scale Milford Oktoberfest

The Devon Connecticut Rotary Club ran the Milford Oktoberfest at Fowler Field yesterday. The highly successful  all day Oktoberfest event drew large crowds (estimated at around 2,000 attendees) included a German Bier Garden (8 different specialty kinds) plus great American and German food, musical entertainment  by the Rumrunners and Hit List as well as a Bavarian Dance Troupe  performing to live German music all topped off by a bratwurst eating contest!

People were having fun, eating, spending money, drinking some beer, spending some more money, enjoying the great weather, dancing, spending some more money and really enjoying themselves. The crowd was even more generous once they learned that the Devon Rotary Club has contributed over $1 million to the Milford.

This was a large scale event put on by a mid-sized Rotary Club. Besides having all ‘hands on deck’ by the Devon members, the club enlisted the support of many dedicated volunteers. The club and all of the volunteers have a great deal to be proud of!!!

Congratulations Devon Rotary!!!
