Westport Rotary Celebrates their 90th Anniversary

The members of the Westport Rotary Club celebrated their 90th Anniversary during their regular weekly meeting this past Tuesday.

Westport Rotary arranged for a Gala Charter Night at the Westport (now Birchwood) Country Club on March 26, 1924 although the actual charter date is March 7, 1924.  In the midst of a blinding snow storm the Westport Club was launched officially. Ninety-eight Rotarians came from all over this part of the state, 25 of them from Greenwich, the Sponsoring Club.

64 years later the Westport Rotary Club would sponsor the Westport Sunrise Club. Today the combined membership of the two Westport Rotary Clubs exceeds 160.

North Haven Rotary – On Saturday 12/14/2013 five other Rotary Clubs cancelled their parties but North Haven Rotary held theirs during the nastiest of nights above the North Haven Funeral Home. The party was hosted by The Havens and Catered by Anthony’s in New Haven.

Westport Rotary – Tuesday 12/17 was another snowy Connecticut Day but that didn’t stop the Westport Rotary Club from hosting the Orphenians during their Holiday luncheon. Attendees were treated to fantastic music as well as a delicious lunch.

Norwalk Rotary – Norwalk Rotarians turned out in big numbers at the Norwalk Inn yesterday for lunch to enjoy the spirited performance by the Norwalk High School Chamber Singers.

Old Saybrook Rotary – The Club held their Holiday gathering at the Hideway in Old Lyme last night. Gerri Lewis organized a rather elaborate grab bag swap, delicious meals (too bad I couldn’t stay for that) and a nice cocktail fellowship before the meeting. It’s always a pleasure visiting OSR!!

East Hampton & East Haddam Rotary – the two Club’s came together for a joint Holiday party last night at the Gelston House in East Haddam for a very big turnout with excellent fellowship, music, food and recognitions.

The Orphenians perform for Westport Rotary today

The weather outside was frightful, but the music was so delightful….

The Staples High School choral group, The Orphenians braved the bad weather and performed for the Westport Rotary Club at Christ & Holy Trinity church today during their annual Holiday luncheon.

It was just about a perfect Rotary meeting; with 45 very talented students singing holiday favorites in lieu of a Rotary speaker.

Westport Rotary Club hosts 2nd Annual Lobsterfest today

The Westport Rotary Club successfully hosted their 2nd Annual Lobsterfest under threatening skies at Compo Beach today. The Club smartly pre-sold almost all of the tickets in advance allowing them the opportunity to focus on running an excellent event, which they did. Despite the looming threat of showers; crowds came in record numbers for this event and were treated to their choice of twin lobsters or a delicious steak with many side items.

All Lobsterfest volunteers donned a flashy yellow t-shirt (thank you Westport) and this honorary volunteer was also given one (thanks again Westport Rotary). The food and drink were top notch as but the service by all of the hardworking volunteers was exceptional and friendly!

If you look closely at the photos below you will see that the event was attended by many Westport Sunrise Rotarians who were also given the the opportunity to see their Wine Tasting tickets today. While Westport Rotary and Westport Sunrise Rotary are two separate and distinct clubs, both clubs are willing to work side by side to help their community.

President Tony Riggio is off to a great start in this new Rotary year as the Westport Rotary Club is firing smoothly on all cylinders adding new members, evaluating new meeting places, forging new working relationships with the Westport Sunrise Club, exploring the possibility of engaging in hands-on international projects and getting ready for their biggest fundraiser; their Lobsterfest on Sept 21st.

The Westport Rotary Club, a Tuesday luncheon club, launched the Westport Sunrise Club 25 years ago increasing the combined Rotary membership of the 2 clubs from 107 to about 160 Rotarians.

The Westport Rotary Club is known for philanthropy and providing hands-on project leadership both locally and internationally, including supporting 33 local organizations with over $50,000 in donations last year. (Source Wesport.Patch.Com)

The Westport Club also focuses well on club service with a deliberate membership program, public relations and leadership succession, Steve Lewine has already been named as President-elect.

Come out to their Lobsterfest on Sept 21st and say hello, Jenn and I will be there. Did I mention that they have yellow t-shirts for the volunteers?
